Arthritis Victoria & your right to privacy
As of 21 December 2001 the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 took effect over many areas of business and commerce in Australia. The legislation is an update of the Privacy Act of 1988; its purpose is to protect your rights with respect to personal information held by organizations.
Arthritis Victoria provides this statement to ensure that you are aware of your rights and the nature of the information we hold.
Arthritis Victoria records the names, contact details and history of donations for all donors whether they are members of the Foundation or not. We do not under any circumstance on sell your name and contact details to any other organisation.
If you have any contact with Arthritis Victoria your records are held at our office at 263 Kooyong Road Elsternwick. The Foundation also records the type of arthritis or other musculoskeletal disease if you have told us. We do this to ensure we can more easily ensure the appropriate information is given to you. This information is considered as sensitive information as nominated by the Act and we have stringent systems in place to ensure your privacy.
If you have made a financial contribution to Arthritis Victoria, your details are held so that there is a full record of the financial activities of Arthritis Victoria with respect to the fundraising activities we undertake. Occasionally we call upon expert advice from other organizations and they may use this information to assist us with research, analysis and fundraising appeals. We work in partnership with these other organizations, but they too must have the same stringent security and policies to ensure your privacy in accordance with the Act.
Arthritis Victoria has always been happy for donors to see the details we hold to ensure they are accurate and up to date. This important policy has now been formalised under the new legislation. If you wish to see your details, simply write to the Privacy Officer Arthritis Victoria, PO Box 130, Caulfield South VIC 3162, giving your name and address.
If you have made a donation to Arthritis Victoria and received a receipt for taxation purposes, we must retain details of your donation for seven years. If you decide not to supply us with your full name and address details when making a gift, we are unable to supply this receipt.
We fully understand that there may be times when you are not in a position to make a gift to us. Of course, you can ask us not to contact you again and we will respect this wish. However please consider that if we cannot approach you using our record of your details, it limits our efforts to provide services to Victorians with a musculoskeletal disease in the future.
Thank you for your caring support.
